What size chainsaw and length of chain blade do you recommend for taking cross sections from remnant wood? (This is an example to get us started, but also a very valid question people can chime in on!)
I think it depends very much on how big the trees / logs are to be sampled. I rarely sample trunks that are more than 40-50 cm in diameter, so a 13" works well for me as I do not want an oversized chainsaw to carry when I'm climbing around at piles of (often wet) tree trunks.
Thanks for that Johannes! Agreed. I tend to go for the lightest saw for my sampling intentions. It's hard to fight the urge to carry a larger bar for those "just-in-case" moments. I guess this is where having a good sampling plan and not deviating from the plan is a good practice.
